Tram Chim National Park: A Wetland Gem in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta

Tram Chim National Park, covering around 7,340 hectares in Dong Thap Province, Mekong Delta, is a remarkable example of wetland conservation in Vietnam. Initially designated as a reserve in 1985 to restore the original Plain of Reeds ecosystem, Tram Chim gained national recognition as a protected site in 1994 and was officially designated a national park in 1999. Since 2012, Tram Chim has held the status of a Ramsar site, highlighting its significance as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

The park is divided into six habitat management plots, bordered and interwoven by 53 kilometers of canals that sustain its biodiversity. One of its notable features is the Melaleuca forest, a planted inundated woodland that provides shelter for various species. Tram Chim experiences annual flooding during the wet season, with water levels reaching depths of 2-3 meters, creating a dynamic environment for aquatic and terrestrial life. However, challenges persist as Tram Chim sits adjacent to a human population of about 22,000 people, creating a delicate balance between conservation and local livelihood needs.

Rich Avian Biodiversity

Tram Chim is home to over 300 bird species, including several rare or endangered ones, though recent years have seen notable population shifts. The population of the iconic Sarus Crane, a species symbolic of the park’s conservation efforts, has dramatically declined—from over 200 individuals to fewer than 20 over a decade. Other species, however, are increasing, such as the Asian Openbill, Oriental Darter, and various cormorants and egrets. These trends are raising concerns among conservationists, prompting research into the ecological dynamics affecting the park’s avian populations.

Ecotourism and Conservation Education

As a Ramsar site, Tram Chim has become a leading destination for ecotourism, attracting visitors keen to explore the Mekong Delta's wetlands and observe its rich birdlife. To enhance visitors' understanding and appreciation, Tram Chim offers accessible views of some of the region's most visually wild bird species, visible even to the untrained eye or through binoculars. Birdwatchers can expect to see species common in Mekong Delta bird sanctuaries, making the park a key site for conservation education and awareness.

Tram Chim National Park stands as a testament to Vietnam’s commitment to conserving wetland ecosystems and protecting threatened species. Its challenges also highlight the need for continued ecological research and sustainable management to preserve this unique ecosystem for future generations.
